The title of this blog is a horrific pun, but hey…gotta suck you in, right?
I have started to pick up more freelance work during the past few months, which is always a good thing. I do freelance graphic design as a part-time venture but I would be lying if I said I didn’t want it to turn into something more. Balancing work outside of work is tricky, and it needs to be done. I also am married with two young kids so it’s really easy to burn the candle at both ends. I do like the challenge of never knowing what kind of project might land in your lap.
The hardest thing about freelancing isn’t completing the work – it’s getting the work. If you truly want to commit to this craft you must be a salesman 110% of the time, which is in and of itself a full time job. I am lucky in that I simply augment my income at the moment by gaining clients and building my portfolio on a slower and more deliberate trajectory.
The other benefit of easing into it is finding out if you really like doing freelance...Everybody would love to set their own hours and be their own boss, but those luxuries come at a price – make no mistake about it. You are salesman, creative director, copywriter, designer & accountant all in one body but you only get paid for one job. Time = money is never more true than to that of a freelancer. I have managed to avoid a baptism by fire because of my approach to getting clients and work.
Right now I enjoy doing freelance work here and there – but I want to continue to push and work on more projects. I’ll be starting work on a product design project in the next couple days – this sounds very cool and challenging. I can’t wait.
