Great progrock bands you’ve never heard of

I am a huge, huge fan of progressive rock.  I think I started to veer that way when I started to really listen to Tool’s “Aenima” record from 1996.  I was completely won over when Tool released “Lateralus” in 2001.  Don’t get me wrong, I like bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains and more straight forward rock music but the older I get, the more I crave strange, meandering songs that have weird time signatures and basically no chorus or verse structure.

I was in a progressive original rock band from 2003 – 2006 and during that time I was introduced to some really crazy, lesser known bands that just blew me away.  Those bands include Opeth, Porcupine Tree and the founding prog rock fathers: King Crimson.  Now, this music isn’t for everybody but if you like big chugging riffs and lots of chord changes you need to check out some of these lesser known bands because they are awesome.  Without further ado, in no particular order:

  • Indukti: This is my favorite band at the moment. They are so dynamic – my god they are like King Crimson on steroids and then some. You MUST listen to the track entitled “Indukted
  • Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster: Just listen to the song called “Exegesis“, that’s all you need to know
  • Soen: Very Tool influenced and the drummer used to be in Opeth
  • Pelican: All instrumental outfit that has some interesting stuff. Check out the song entitled “Dead between the walls
  • Russian Circles: Good, chugging riffs – instrumental as well
  • Dead Soul Tribe: Very cool band, kind of like Indukti, but with a singer who is like a beat poet
  • LizZard: a three-piece outfit with a chick drummer that can slam
  • Sleepers Awake: They remind me of Neurosis, only more dynamic
