“1995 was one of the best years of my life, and I think about a certain period of 1995 very often and very fondly.”

I remember it so well – it was March of 1995 and I had just gotten my first full-time job working at the local Winn-Dixie supermarket in Alpharetta, Ga.  I was 15 years old and a sophomore at Milton High School, about to turn 16 in a few months.  I was just starting to find the music that made me tick – some alternative rock but mostly heavy metal.  Good times…

I was a shy kid and shy teenager – I was good at making people laugh as I’ve always had a goofy sense of humor but I was pretty insecure.  I was scared of girls, didn’t have a ton of friends and liked to draw comic books in some of my spare time.  I was too small and nonathletic to get involved in any high school sports and, truth be told, I didn’t care much at all about sports after little league baseball.  I mean, just look at me back then:

I really started to turn the corner when I got my first real job and then I got my driver’s license.  I didn’t have my own car right away but I did bounce around in the family’s 1991 Ford Taurus.  It wasn’t a cool car, but just being able to drive myself around was awesome.  I remember that White Zombie’s Astro Creep 2000 album had just came out and I would blare that CD in the Taurus all day long. I ended up working at Winn Dixie starting in 1995-1997 and then worked part time at the WD in Athens, GA when I started college at UGA.  I had been promoted to frozen food manager at the age of 16, then the produce manager at 17.  I was really climbing the corporate ladder…I had a couple of really good friends during that time that worked with me at Winn Dixie.  We did a lot of silly stuff, all in good fun.  We used to prank our own store all the time.  My favorite was when we did a jerky-boys type of prank on the night manager, asking why we had to piss into a cup in order to get a job as a cashier.  Ahh, fun times!

The music that I listened to during the spring and summer of 1995 is something that I will never forget.  Just look at the hodge-podge listing of great bands/songs that came out in this period of time:

  1. White Zombie – More Human than Human
  2. Filter – Hey Man, Nice Shot
  3. Foo Fighters – I’ll Stick Around
  4. Hum – Stars
  5. Smashing Pumpkins – Bullet with Butterfly Wings
  6. Live – I alone/Lightning Crashes
  7. Better than Ezra – Good, In the Blood
  8. Mad Season – River of Deceit
  9. Toadies – Possum Kingdom
  10. Spacehog – In the Meantime

Fast forward 20 years and I’m still the same goofy metal-head, I just don’t work at a supermarket and I’m married with two kids.  1995 was one of the best years of my life, and I think about a certain period of 1995 very often and very fondly.  I haven’t seen many of those friends and acquaintances in a long, long time – but that’s OK.  I prefer to remember them as they were.
